Energy through sound is an inexhaustible source of power and joy in life.…Dr. A Tomatis

Sports

Most people think that sporting gifts are just one of those things that some lucky people are blessed with. Professor Tomatis asked the obvious question, "but why some, and not others?" Understanding the function of the ear provides some of the answers.

The ear does not only exist for listening, it also provides our sense of balance, our sense of rhythm, our sense of spatial awareness, information about the distance between us and things and in all this, the fine tuning of our sense of co-ordination. Sensory information provided by the ear also stimulates the cortex of the brain, charging it with energy, in fact 85% of its cortical energy, which in turn stimulates the body.

The vestibular system, which is part of the inner ear, controls in effect all the muscles in the body and ensures balance and co-ordination. When the listening patterns of an individual are distorted and blocked, the flow of energy to the body is also disturbed and this can result in poor posture, slowed down responses, poor body control; all of which can have knock on effects of increased stress and low the low self-esteem that are associated with stress.

Take as an analogy a violin with a slack violin string which cannot produce a tuned sound. When the tuning peg is cranked to its optimum level it allows the string to be perfectly tuned. Your body is the violin, which is designed for efficiency and performance. The ears are the tuning pegs of the body.

By stimulating the muscles of the middle ear using the electronic listening device a finer tuning can be made and the ear can more efficiently fulfill its functions of providing cortical energy and balance both psychologically and physiologically. This can result in improvements in rhythm, body control, posture, fine motor skills, eye to ball co-ordination, concentration, focus, enhanced energy, better muscle tone, endurance and reduced anxiety levels. When an individual has a clearer relationship with him/herself relationships with others also improve and a team spirit is enjoyed.

So if it is some points off your handicap or a more powerful and relaxed swing, something to inject concentration and vitality into your game...your ears can make the difference between winning and losing by giving you the advantage of being a more precision instrument able to think, react and move efficiently in time and space.
